Multi-Scale Phase Change, Flow and Reaction under Confinement with Energy and Environmental Applications |
Περιγραφή: |
Phase change, flow and reaction under confinement, within a porous medium of regular or random geometry, are processes encountered in a plethora of applications of scientific and industrial interest (e.g. heat pipes, MEMS, catalysts in reactors, biological media, transport and reaction in subsurface reservoirs and aquifers, etc.).
In the first part of this presentation we review the concept of confinement within a porous medium and the methods used for porous media representation/reconstruction. We also establish the need to perform studies at multiple length scales (i.e. molecular, pore and continuum scale). Finally, we discuss the interconnections between the energy and environmental applications presented at the second part and introduce basic concepts related to hydrate science, “Hydrogen-based Economy” and capture and sequestration of “green-house” gases.
In the second part we present results from particular applications with emphasis on energy security and environmental stewardship. We report experimental observations which are integrated with computational studies at the molecular and pore scales. The results are incorporated into continuum scale models.
Two major groups of processes are studied: i) Liquid to Gas phase change with particular examples the evaporation/drying and bubble growth in porous media and ii) Solid to Liquid/Gas phase change with particular examples the hydrate formation/dissociation and the chemical dissolution of a solid matrix as a result of acid injection.
